Our ultraviolet purifiers contain one or more STER-L-RAY ® Germicidal Ultraviolet Lamps. These are short-wave, low pressure tubes that produce ultraviolet wavelengths lethal to microorganisms.
As shown in Table A below, approximately 95% of the ultraviolet energy emitted by our ultraviolet purifiers is at a line of 254 nanometers. Germicidal ultraviolet lamps take advantage of the fact that this wavelength is in the region of maximum germicidal effectiveness and is highly lethal to virus, bacteria, and mold spores — as displayed in Table B.

As water or air passes through an ultraviolet purifier, it is exposed to germicidal UV light. As shown in an earlier FAQ, this process deactivates the genetic material of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing and rendering them harmless.
