Atlantic Ultraviolet Corporation® has been in existence since 1963, with humble beginnings in Long Island City, NY. The following narrative, relayed by owner Hilary Boehme’s sister, is from when the company was only six years old. Read the story or watch our music video above to learn how Atlantic Ultraviolet truly has a part in the Woodstock story.
A Barefoot Woman and a Sales Inquiry
One day in the summer of 1969, a young woman wearing no shoes came in to the office looking to buy 10 Admission Control Kits. Each of these kits contained a stamp pad, special ink, a stamp, and a UV blacklight for return entry to events. As it turns out, these kits were purchased for the Woodstock festival.
While the event’s organizers expected no more than 50,000 attendees, the numbers that weekend exceeded 400,000. Festival-goers hopped over fences and the size of the crowd became impossible to control. Traffic in Bethel, NY was severe, causing many to abandon their vehicles and walk the rest of the way. Needless to say, the admission control kits were not used for long, since the circumstances forced organizers to stop charging for admission.
Reflecting on Woodstock 50 Years Later
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the first Woodstock festival. Although much has changed since August 15, 1969, that weekend left a mark on the timeline of music history. Amidst the challenges faced by attendees—and by the surrounding community (Sullivan County even declared a state of emergency)—Woodstock was indeed a peaceful event. Fifty years later, music and ultraviolet are still going strong. Atlantic Ultraviolet is glad to have contributed to these “3 Days of Peace & Music.”
