Cross-contamination from health threatening infectious microorganisms such as bacteria and virus continue even with strict adherence to disinfection procedures. Adopting Germicidal UV Air and Surface Disinfection Strategies can be taken to prevent this.
Since the 1950’s, germicidal ultraviolet lamps have been utilized for air and surface disinfection. These lamps emit ultraviolet energy at a line of 254 nanometers. This wavelength is in the region of maximum germicidal effectiveness and is highly lethal to virus, bacteria, and mold spores. Now there are products such as germicidal ultraviolet room air sanitizers, indirect air units, and air duct disinfection systems that can be utilized in occupied spaces.

Germicidal UV Room Air Disinfection
Germicidal ultraviolet room air sanitizers are available in a number of different configurations to adapt to any settings. Ultraviolet room air sanitizers can be mounted into the ceiling, on a wall, or are available for portable or mobile use. Air is drawn into the unit through a washable electrostatic particulate filter and then forced into an ultraviolet exposure chamber where it is irradiated by germicidal ultraviolet light. Purified air leaves the exposure chamber through the louvered exhaust. Units can be sized accordingly, depending on the size of the room and air changes per hour required by the application. Germicidal UV Indirect Air Disinfection
Germicidal ultraviolet indirect air disinfection equipment purifies the upper air in occupied spaces in order to reduce the occupants’ risk associated with infectious airborne microbes. These fixtures are designed to project the ultraviolet rays across the upper room air, thereby destroying bacteria and virus that is carried into the ultraviolet field by convection currents of air circulation. It is an important requirement that these fixtures are utilized in rooms with a minimum height of 8 feet. For more information, visit our Hygeaire® product page.

Germicidal UV Air Duct Disinfection
Germicidal ultraviolet air duct disinfection units can be utilized in HVAC equipment, either for treatment of the air stream or surfaces. With the proper system design and installation, the moving air can be disinfected. Typical results experience up to a 98% kill rate, which is essential for hospitals and laboratories.
Ultraviolet air duct fixtures are sized based on time and intensity: the time that the air or the surfaces are contacted with the ultraviolet and intensity of the fixtures to be utilized. Note that multiple fixtures may be required in some cases to increase the intensity and meet the required dosage. Installation of air duct disinfection fixtures is recommended to be perpendicular to the airflow. This method is most effective as the lamp rays will travel the full length of the duct, therefore increasing the exposure time and effectiveness of the fixtures(s).
